Gov. Peter Shumlin today announced the scheduled opening of the Green Mountain Psychiatric Care Center in Morrisville for Jan. 2, 2013. The mental health facility is renovated, staffed, licensed, and ready to begin serving patients, and Interim Medical Director Maria Novas-Schmidt has been named.
“Opening this eight-bed facility and appointing Dr. Novas-Schmidt as interim director are critical steps in easing the pressure on Vermont’s strained mental health system since Tropical Storm Irene destroyed the state hospital in Waterbury,” Gov. Shumlin said. He noted that the state also plans to fast-track plans to build a 25-bed hospital in Berlin, which is expected to break ground in the near future, is finalizing a temporary modular mental health facility in Middlesex, and is moving forward with additional mental health bed and services in hospitals and community settings around the state.
“We continue to push as fast as reasonably possible to ensure the needed services are available to Vermont’s mental health community,” said Interim Mental Health Commissioner Mary Moulton, who held an open house with the Governor, staff and media today to announce the Morrisville opening. “We are very excited to have Maria in this position at GMPCC and look forward to opening our doors to our first patients next week.”
"We have a unique opportunity to develop our program in a small scale, to try new ideas and work in close collaboration learning from each other with the goal of improving patient care."
Novas-Schmidt received her degrees at the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. She did her residency at Fletcher Allen, joining the Vermont State Hospital staff in 2005. Board Certified in Psychiatry and Neurology, Novas-Schmidt has had a private practice in Burlington.
In addition, Hospital Chief Executive Officer is Jeff Rothenberg, who joined the Department of Mental Health last year as the Principal Assistant to the Commissioner. Rothenberg has worked within the designated agency system for 20 years as a clinician and program director for both children and adult programs.
The Green Mountain Psychiatric Care Center is located at 72 Harrell Street in Morrisville.
