Sandy Recap – Tuesday Afternoon

– The Vermont Emergency Operations Center in Waterbury has returned to Level 1 status (VEM staff answering resource calls) as of 3:00 p.m.

The following is the latest status information as of 3:00 p.m.:

• Injuries and Damage

o No known major injuries or fatalities due to the storm.

• Shelters Status

o None

• Power outages

o Outage numbers continue to decline; refer to the state’s utilities or for updates on all power outages.

• Road Update

o No state road closures related to Sandy, at this time. Some local road closures remain – please respect all detours.

• Assistance to other states

o Vermont state agencies and response organizations will review and fill requests to deploy to assist other states as those requests are made.

• Stay prepared

o The extra food and water, batteries, flashlights, and other necessities you may have stocked up on can be used during the next emergency. Stash away your supplies and add to those items for future use.

• Stay safe cleaning up

o Do NOT touch a downed power line and be 100 certain any trees or debris are NOT in contact with power lines when clearing them. You can be electrocuted – treat every line as if it were live.

o Ensure you use chainsaws or any other machinery used for clearing trees and debris properly, and that they are in safe working order.

 Chains and controls in working order

 Never fuel a hot chainsaw

 Make sure the chain is sharp and the lubrication reservoir is full

 Wear proper safety equipment

o Should there be localized flooding

 Never drive or walk through floodwaters.
