Secretary of State Jim Condos Completes Election Audit

On November 29, 2012, Secretary of State Jim Condos and his Election team conducted a random audit of vote tabulator results from the November 6, 2012 General Election. The four towns chosen were: Barre Town, Brandon, Essex (Chittenden 8-1), and Newfane. The ballots from these four towns were counted by hand, and the results were compared to the result of the count from the optical scan machine on election night.

Shortly after 8:45 a.m. Secretary of State Jim Condos welcomed volunteers from the four towns, and from nearby Washington County towns, and swore them all in as election officials for the purpose of conducting the audit. Ballot bags from the four towns were unsealed, ballots were divided into stacks of 50, and the volunteer election officials began hand-counting the ballots. The hand-count was completed shortly before 11:30 a.m.

The results of the audit, comparing the totals recorded by the optical scan machines on election night with the results of the hand count conducted this morning, are displayed below. Generally, a deviation of 1 – 2 is considered acceptable. As can be seen below, the changes were insignificant at much less than 1.

“I am pleased to report that the results continue to show that the optical scan machines are an accurate resource for the counting of ballots,” said Secretary Condos.

Secretary Condos maintains that the audit of these elections is a valuable and necessary tool to continue to insure the integrity of our elections process.

Secretary Condos would like to say thank you to all of the volunteers who helped to conduct the audit and especially to the four town clerks who graciously participated and helped recruit counters from their towns: Donna Kelty (Barre Town), Bill Dick (Brandon), Cheryl Moomey (Essex), and Gloria Cristelli (Newfane). Thank-you!
